De Boer: "De Eerste Kamer blinkt uit in bedachtzaamheid"
ChristenUnie-senator Remmelt de Boer gaat na ruim 40 jaar stoppen met de politiek. De Stentor sprak met de oud-wethouder over het werk in Den Haag. "Dit was de absolute kers op de taart", zegt hij met een brede glimlach.
Kampen kent hem als raadslid en wethouder, maar tegenwoordig voelt hij zich senang in de Haagse kaasstolp. Het laatste kunstje na veertig jaar publieke dienst. Vier jaar lang voelde Remmelt de Boer zich een kind in de snoepwinkel. Na decennia lokale politiek in Groningen, Steenwijk en Kampen mocht hij zijn carrière afsluiten in het hart van de Hollandse macht; als senator in Den Haag.
Straks, na de provinciale verkiezingen, gaat het boek 'politiek' echter definitief dicht voor de 68-jarige CU'er.
"Dit was de absolute kers op de taart", zegt hij met een brede glimlach. "Het cliché van de Haagse kaasstolp is echt waar, daar heb ik met grote verbazing naar staan kijken. Het is een vierkante kilometer waar zo'n beetje alles in dit land wordt bepaald. Dat je daar deel van uitmaakt is best bijzonder. Je ziet de belangrijke beslissingen onder je ogen genomen worden. En ja, inderdaad: dat gebeurt voornamelijk in de befaamde wandelgangen en achterkamertjes."
Dat De Boer in de Eerste Kamer terecht kwam, was nogal een verrassing, niet in het minst voor hemzelf. Na zijn wethouderschap van 2001 tot 2006, vond hij het eigenlijk welletjes. Toch zei hij 'ja' toen de ChristenUnie hem vroeg of hij op de kieslijst voor de Eerste Kamerverkiezingen. Het was even schrikken toen hij ontdekte dat hij op de tweede positie stond. "Toen kon ik niet meer terug natuurlijk en achteraf heb ik daar totaal geen spijt van gehad."
De Boer voelde zich vanaf het eerste moment senang in de senaat. "De meeste collega's zijn ervaren, door de wol geverfde bestuurders. Die hoeven zich niet meer te bewijzen of profileren. Waar in de Tweede Kamer de waan van de dag heerst, daar blinkt de Eerste Kamer vooral uit in bedachtzaamheid."
